The Story Behind Nicole Lenzen’s Designs: the Mariposa Dress

by Lisa Viet

The recently launched Nicole Lenzen New York collection takes us through an amazing story of elegant contemporary, feminine silhouettes conveyed by dresses inspired by vintage fashion and swing dancing.

After presenting the Elena, we move to another breathtaking model, the Mariposa dress from the sweet Candy collection. Its flowy skirt and shiny jewel tones will sweep you off your feet.

The perfect cocktail dress

First made by the designer for herself to wear to a gala event, the Mariposa dress features a pretty draped bodice, a flirty flared skirt and a tropical beaded and embroidered waistband that make a perfect festive dress and a great alternative to the little black dress.

Nicole Lenzen attended a theater opening followed by a cocktail evening organized by a director from the swing dance scene. Clover green silk charmeuse leftover from an unconventional wedding dress made by Lenzen and the colorful intensity of the tropics inspired the sumptuous Mariposa dress. Catching the light and dance movements in a perfect fashion, the dress drew attention so successfully that the dress eventually became one of the key designs in the new Candy collection.

A colorful and festive design

Twirling from sleek and smooth, to full throttle fun, the Mariposa dress suits its Spanish name – meaning butterfly – like a glove. It features a softly draped bodice for a lightly structured fit, a colorful hand-beaded and embroidered silk organza waistband that contrasts the color beautifully and hugs the waist for a flattering feminine silhouette. The matte bodice and shiny, light-catching circular skirt are achieved by using both sides of a sumptuous silk charmeuse, available in bright jewel tones of azure blue and clover green.

The Mariposa dress is perfectly constructed at couture level in India in a region that has specialized in hand-made beading and embroidery for centuries. The trim and silk are carefully assembled and provide the flawless quality and level of detail that are intrinsic in Lenzen's custom couture expertise.

A flirty dress for the confident woman

Inspired by nature and floral prints – for the clover green – and the glory of the Mediterranean sea waters – for the Azure blue – the Mariposa dress highlights the confident, attention-loving woman who is not afraid to stand out in a crowd and attract compliments. Its embellished features will shine best when worn with minimal accessories and paired with black or nude shoes. A color picked from one of the shades on the waistband will also work beautifully as a pop. The jewel tones of the dress suit most skin tones and are perfect for a cocktail party, a New Year’s eve or a gala event.

Embrace the excitement of dressing up for the holidays and shop the dress that will take your loved ones’ breath away!
